Complete Buying Guide: Grip Mats

If you tour muddy pitches, wet grass or icy hardstandings, the Milenco Giant Lattice Grip Mats are worth knowing about before you buy. This XL set is built for heavy-duty use, using Milenco's registered lattice design to give a much larger contact area — and so more grip — than conventional grip mats.

What the lattice design does

The mats' registered lattice pattern is engineered for a bigger surface area and superior bite in soft or slippery ground. Interlocking edges let you link multiple mats together without straps or cords, so you can build a longer track where you need extra length to get clear.

Two ways to use them

Milenco designs these for two scenarios. If you park on soft ground, you can position the mats under the drive wheels before you unhitch or level, so you have a solid, high-grip surface ready for when you leave. If you're already stuck, slide a mat so the tyre sits at the start of the lattice, then apply gentle power to climb onto it and move forward — linking a second mat if you need a longer run.

Who they suit

They're aimed at caravans, motorhomes, campervans and tow vehicles facing muddy fields, wet grass or icy patches — in other words, most UK touring situations away from hardstanding pitches. The mats are described as high-grip yet lightweight, so they're reasonably easy to handle and stow compared with heavier recovery boards.

Before you buy

Consider how many mats you're likely to need — a single mat helps for a straightforward drive-away, but linking two or more gives a longer escape path if your pitch tends to get properly waterlogged. Because they interlock without extra hardware, adding a second mat later to extend your set is straightforward.
