Comparing Different Hitchlocks - Expert Analysis

Hitchlocks vary considerably in the level of protection they offer, largely down to the steel gauge, lock cylinder quality, and which independent bodies have tested them. Here's what stands out about the Milenco Super Heavy Duty Winterhoff Hitchlock (WS3000).

Three independent approvals

Rather than relying on a single test, this lock carries SCM MP03, Sold Secure Gold, and Swedish SSF approval. Holding all three is a meaningful signal, since each body tests slightly different attack methods, and Sold Secure Gold in particular represents a high bar for a hitchlock.

Steel gauge and cylinder

Built from 4mm heavy-duty steel with what Milenco calls its strongest high-security cylinder in this class, the lock is designed to resist forced and picked entry beyond what a standard-duty hitchlock would withstand.

Fit is hitch-specific

This model fits Winterhoff WS3000 hitches from 2002 onwards without a side lever — it will not suit every caravan, so matching the lock to your specific hitch type is essential rather than optional.

Correct use

It's rated for use hitched or unhitched, but explicitly not while towing. Three stainless-steel keys are supplied along with a security ball and carry case, and recording your key number is worthwhile given there's no master key.
